The diaries of the Mongolia-Sichuan expedition (1907-1909) of the well-known Russian explorer of Central Asia Pyotr Kuzmich Kozlov is a valuable source of information on geography, ethnography, flora and fauna of the vast territories of Western China, Tibet and Mongolia. These records also describe minutely Kozlov’s discovery of the medieval town of Khara-Khoto on the western fringe of the Gobi desert and the outstanding archeological finds he made therein. The diaries abound in various notes of ethnographic and socio-political character which supplement and considerably expand our knowledge of the peoples of Central Asia, their history, religion, customs and traditions and provide valuable insights into the relations between Imperial Russia and China of the Qing dynasty.
